BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Biography engraver: Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) was a Dutch engraver, son of Arnold Houbraken. He became one of the most distinguished portrait engravers of the 18th century, working for Dutch and English publishers. His engravings are celebrated for their refined burin technique and elegant tonal modelling.
Biography artist: Hendrik Pothoven (1725-1807) was a Dutch painter and draughtsman active in the mid-18th century. He designed portraits and historical compositions, several of which were translated into engravings by leading printmakers such as Jacobus Houbraken.
