BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Biography engraver: Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) was a Dutch engraver and one of the most important portrait printmakers of the 18th century. Son of Arnold Houbraken, he worked in Amsterdam and became renowned for his refined burin technique and elegant portrait engravings after Dutch masters.
Biography artist: Hendrik Pothoven (1725-1807) was a Dutch painter and draughtsman who provided designs for engraved portraits. The composition ultimately derives from a painted portrait by Gerard van Honthorst (1592-1656), a leading Dutch Caravaggist painter known for court portraits and historical scenes.
