Rare Antique Print-Engraving-VANITAS-OLD WOMAN-MARRIAGE-Jeremias Falck-c.1655

Jeremias Falck (1610-1677) after Bernardo Strozzi (ca. 1581-1644). This plate was originally part of a collection of Italian late Renaissance and Baroque paintings owned by two Amsterdam merchants named Gerard Reynst in the seventeenth century and is now in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow. The print is clearly one of the great masterpieces of Baroque reproductive engraving.

Engraving, after 1656, 397 x 318 mm., Block 156 i/ii, Hollstein 156. Very fine, proof impression, before all letters, on laid paper. Trimmed at plate marks. Pinholes in all 4 corners. Small tear at left margin and slight paperloss and tear in right margin, restored and backed.

Despite her aged face and flabby body, vanity, encouraged by the assistance of two maids, blinds the woman to her decrepit state and near-imminent demise.

Jeremias Falck (1610-1677), was born in Poland, had a brilliant engraving technique.
