(Be careful.) Father time is opening a curtain, pointing his finger to a sign of the future (l’avenir). Before him an hourglass and a peace treaty, with the seals of Prussia, Great Britain, France, Russia, and Austria. This image related to the uncertain future in 1795.
Etching in sanguine on wove paper.
Sheet size: 21,8 x 27,2 cm. Image size: 20,6 x 26 cm.
From a bound series of 20 prints on the Batavian Republic in 1795: ‘Hollandia Regenerata’, possibly published by William Humphrey in London, 1795. Ref: FMH 5431-a/20.
Made by James Gillray (possibly) after David Hess.
Condition: Good, given age. Trimmed. Small paper loss at top left, backed. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
