Made by ‘Lucas Kilian’ after ‘Hans von Aachen’. Lucas / Lukas Kilian (1579-1637) and Wolfgang Kilian (1581-1662) were German painters, designers and etcher/engravers from Augsburg of mostly religious subjects and portraits. Sons of the Silezian jeweler and engraver Bartholomaus Kilian, the first of a lineage of engravers and publishers. As their father died early on and his mother remarried with the Antwerp painter Dominique Kustos / Domenicus Custos / de Coster or Custodis (c. 1550-1612), they received much of their artistic training from him. They travelled and worked in Venice. Hans von Aachen (1552-1615) was a German painter/draughtsman. He was born in Cologne, but worked in Venice, Rome, Florence, and from 1587 in Munich. In 1592 he was appointed imperial court painter to Rudolph II and moved to Prague for this appointment, where he would die in 1615.
