Description

Medium: woodcut on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: cicle with initals IB.

Sheet size: 35 x 33 cm (13.78 x 12.99 inch). Image size: 27.5 x 25 cm. (10.83 x 9.84 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Light foxing, creasing, and soiling. Paper is rather thin, with some thin spots and small holes, partly backed. Old folding. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From Oude ende Nieuwe Geestelyke Liedekens, third part, published in Amsterdam by the heirs of the widow C. Stichter, ca. 1740.

Reference: STCN; Dutch Song Database (Stichter ONiGeLi1740).

Biography engraver: Johannes Stichter was an 18th-century Amsterdam publisher and bookseller, active at the sign of the ‘Gaper’ on the Rokkin. He and his heirs issued religious songbooks and popular prints, often illustrated with simple woodcuts reflecting everyday life and devotional themes.
