From: ‘Liber artificiosus alphabeti maioris, oder: neu inventirtes Kunst- Schreib- und Zeichenbuch’, by Johann Merken, published in Muhlheim am Rhein, 1782-1785. This was a richly illustrated artist’s manual and typography guide with a rich assortment of subjects for the aspiring draftsman and calligrapher.
Made by ‘Heinrich Hugo Cöntgen’ after ‘Johann Merken’. Heinrich Hugo Cöntgen / Coentgen (1727-1792) was a German engraver from Mainz. He was the father of the painter and engraver Georg Joseph Cöntgen (1752-1799).
Condition: Fair, given age. Wornhole in middle. Overall creasing. Light soiling. Light staining on rear. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
