Antique drawing, untitled. An original design for a Pipo de Clown book illustration. The design shows the broken down car of Snuf and Snuitje (Pipo”s main antagonists) on a very rainy day. One bends into the motor while the other holds an umbrella over his head. Pipo the Clown with his characteristic travel trailer (and his wife Mamaloe, daughter Petra and donkey Nononono) appear in the background to witness this. Pipo de Clown is a famous Dutch character from an early Dutch television series. Later spin-offs included books, movies and records. Signed in the lower right of the image. The annotation DD32 on the rear may suggest this design has been published in Donald Duck (magazine). Provenance: From a private collection.Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Jan Wesseling’ after own design. Jan Anthonius Wesseling (1925-1999) is best known as an illustrator, although he has also made some comics. He studied advertising, but was sent to work in Germany during WWII. During the war he kept his artistic ambitions alive by drawing portraits of factory co-worker’s family members. After the war he was sent to Indonesia where he was drawing for several soldier’s magazines. He joined the Marten Toonder Studios in 1956. Wesseling turned to illustration after this and made designs for Donald Duck, Okki, Bobo, Tina and Pipo de Clown as well as book cover illustrations for many famous Dutch children’s books.
