Reverse copy of Adriaen Collaert’s print depicting Aeolus, crowned and holding a bridle, represents winter amid a frozen river with skaters, tree pollarding, and slaughter scenes. Zodiac symbols Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces are visible in the sky.

Made by Julius Goltzius (possibly) after Adriaen Collaert after Maarten de Vos.

Medium: Engraving on hand-laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 27.5 x 21.5 cm (10.83 x 8.46 inch). Image size: 27.5 x 21.5 cm. (10.83 x 8.46 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Slight damage to corners. Paper losse in bottom left corner, remargined. Light soiling. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Very rare print, enlarged and based on Collaert’s series published in Antwerp, c. 1587.

Reference: Hollstein 1411.I, New Hollstein (Collaert Dynasty), British Museum 1870,0625.673 (copy).

Biography engraver: Julius Goltzius (1555-1601), a Flemish printmaker and publisher. He was probably born in Antwerp around 1555 as the son of the painter, printer, publisher and humanist Hubert Goltzius and his wife Elisabeth Verhulst. His mother came from a well-known family of painters and illuminators from Mechelen. Her sister Mayken Verhulst married Pieter Coecke van Aelst and became the mother-in-law of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Julius Goltzius married in 1587 in Antwerp and probably died in that city well after 1601.

Biography artist: Adriaen Collaert (c. 1560-1618), a prominent engraver and publisher of Netherlandish allegorical and religious prints. Maarten de Vos (1532-1603), a Netherlandish painter and draughtsman famous for allegorical and religious works.
