Medium: Line and aquatint etching on wove (vellin) paper.

Sheet size: 59 x 72.5 cm (23.23 x 28.54 inch). Image size: 57 x 70 cm. (22.44 x 27.56 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Irregular paper edges. Small tear at top right extending into image, backed. Ghosting from previous matting/framing in margins. Some soiling. Due to size sheet a bit creased vertically in middle in printing process. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

By Jean-Pierre-Marie Jazet (1788-1871) after a painting by Horace Vernet (1789-1863). Jazet bought the painting on may 25th 1840, in the same year the remains of Napoleon were returned to France. The painting is now in the Demidov collection. This print was executed in 1840.

Biography engraver: Jean-Pierre-Marie Jazet (1788-1871), French engraver known for his skillful engravings of iconic paintings.

Biography artist: Horace Vernet (1789-1863), French Romantic painter celebrated for his depictions of historical and military subjects.
