Condition: good, given age. Light foxing, creasing, and surface soiling. Trimmed to the image, with remargening. Areas with paper loss and small tears in the paper edges. Despite it’s flaws, the plate stil makes a nice impression. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Biography engraver: Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert (1522-1590) was a Dutch engraver, draftsman, humanist, and writer. Active in Haarlem and Antwerp, he played an important intellectual role in the religious and political debates of his time. As a printmaker he frequently worked after designs by Maarten van Heemskerck. His engravings, often published by Hieronymus Cock, are among the most significant examples of mid-16th-century Netherlandish printmaking.
Biography artist: Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574) was an influential Netherlandish painter and draftsman. After traveling to Rome (1532-1536), he introduced Italian Renaissance influences into the Netherlands. He designed numerous print series for the publisher Hieronymus Cock, including ‘The Victories of Emperor Charles’ combining historical and allegorical themes with monumental figural compositions.
