Made by Valentine Green after William Cochrane. Valentine Green (1739-1813), was a renowned British engraver and print publisher. He was one of the first engravers to show how admirably mezzotint engraving could be applied for pictorial compositions as well as portraits. Particularly his portrait engravings are sought for by collectors. His engravings are distinguished by exceptional richness and subtlety of tone, light and shade. He is considered one of the foremost Britsh engravers of his time. William Cochrane (1738-1785) was active as portrait painter in Glasgow.
