Description

Vernis mou etching on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 19,3 x 26,5 cm. Image size: 15,5 x 20,9 cm.

Made by Gilles Demarteau after Jean Baptist Le Prince. Gilles Demarteau (1729-1776) was a French engraver. He worked closely with Fragonard, Van Loo and Boucher. He is credited with creating a new polychrome pencil etching process. Jean Baptist Le Prince (1734-1781) came from Metz and studied with Boucher in Paris. He stayed in St. Ptersburg between 1758 and 1763. After returning to France he etched many Russian scenes. Le Prince is also considered to be the inventor of the aquatint.

Condition: Very good, given age. Minor crease lower right margin, outside image area. Light soiling. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
