7 Tulips – A Dutch inspired landscape with 7 tulips: in the middle ‘Louis XVI’, below ‘General Washington’, ‘La Majestieuse’, ‘Carnation Tulip’, ‘Duchess of Devonshire’, ‘Earl Spencer’ and ? A gorgeous and very desirable plate in an early ed.

Etching, aquatint, stipple- and mezzotint engraving, hand coloured on wove paper. Watermark: J. Whatman 1794.

From the famous and rare book ‘Temple of Flora’ by Dr. Robert John Thornton, published over a period 1799-1807 and a second ed. in 1811. This work is one of the most famous works on botany printed in England. It contained 70 large plates of exotic plant species, set in their natural habitat. State: 1st State. Ref: Nissen BBI 1955.

Biography

Made by Richard Earlom and others after Philip Reinagle. Artists: Tornton drew the rose himself and further had a large number of artist participate preparing drawings including Philip Reinagle, who executed most of the drawings but also Abraham Pether, Sydenham Edwards and Peter Henderson. Engravers: Richard Earlom, James Caldwell and Thomas Burke. Author: Dr. Robert John Thornton (1768-1837) edited and coordinated the publication of ‘Temple of Flora’ himself, which led to a lenghty and costly enterprise and bringing him to the brink of bancruptcy.

Condition

Condition: Very good, given age. Light ghosting of margins from previous framing, but at a far anough distance not to disturb new framing. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
