Antique print, untitled. Depiction of the statue of the Aphrodite of Knidos, also Venus Pudica. Unclad statue of Venus in contrapposto (counterpose), concealing the pubic area with her hand, holding cloth over a vase. Venus is the Roman goddess whose functions encompassed love, beauty, desire, sex, fertility, prosperity and victory. The original is in the Vatican museum. This print from Jan de Bisschop’s “Signorum veterum Icones”, 1669.Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Jan de Bisschop’ after ‘P. Donker’. Jan de Bisschop (1628-1671), was widely influential in art and art publishing. A lawyer by profession, he set up practice in The Hague around 1652 and later founded a drawing academy there. He mingled with an elite circle of intellectuals. Pieter Donker (also Pieter P. Doncker, 1635-1668) was a Dutch draughtsman and painter.
Condition: Good, given age. Print attached to carrier sheet. Some small stains in margin and in print. Lower edge dampstained, some soiling in the lower right margin corner. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
