Nero’s gulden paleis. – This print shows a view on the palace of Nero. Emperor Nero, who lived in the 1 century AD, went down in history as a tyrant and killer of his own mother. But he also became known as the creator of the most luxurious palace in his honor. The construction of the Golden House began in 64 according to the design of the ancient Roman architects North and Celer. According to the descriptions of the historians of Tranquill and Tacitus, the result was a magnificent palace complex, where there were not only halls, but also whole fields, ponds, fountains, pools with mineral water and shady alleys. Villa with an area of ??up to 120 ha has become a separate small world. However, the emperor did not manage to enjoy his paradise for long, after 4 of the year after the completion of the palace he committed suicide.

Made by ‘Herman Besseling’ after an anonymous artist. Herman Besseling was a well known Dutch cartographer and engraver who was active in Utrecht 1724 – 1747.

Condition: Good, given age. No margin on the right, small tears in the upper en lower margin not affecting the image have being retored, tear in right margin being retored, original folding. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
