BACKGROUND INFORMATION
From: ‘Peintures, statues, bas-reliefs et camees de la Galerie de Florence et du Palais Pitti,’ produced by French engravers working in Italy, 1789-1805.
Biography engraver: Beno?t Louis Henriquez (1732-1806) was a French engraver active in the late 18th century. He was part of a group of French engravers who worked in Italy, notably engaged in reproducing paintings from the Florentine collections, including the Palazzo Pitti. Henriquez specialised in burin engraving, translating important religious and historical paintings into finely detailed prints characterized by careful cross-hatching and tonal gradation.
Biography artist: Lodovico Cardi, called Cigoli (1559-1613), was an Italian painter and architect of the late Mannerist and early Baroque period, active mainly in Florence and Rome. His works bridged Mannerism and early Baroque naturalism. Jean-Baptiste Wicar (1762-1834) was a French Neoclassical painter and draughtsman, pupil of Jacques-Louis David, who worked extensively in Italy and produced drawings after Italian master paintings for reproductive engravings.
