‘REPRESENTATION OF AN OFFERING TO CAPT. COOK (?) OF THE SANDWICH ISLANDS.’

– This print shows a group of men seated in a circle on the ground, in front of a thatched roof building, Captain James Cook and three white men are seated at the head of the circle, and a man wearing a cloth wrap is offering Cook a pig. Another man seated in the circle is holding a pig. Two large cloaked wooden carvings are behind the White men, and a small fire is next to the circle of men; another man is kneeling on the edge of the circle of men eating some food; trees are in the background. The South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom in the southern Atlantic Ocean. The southern eight islands of the Sandwich Islands Group were discovered by James Cook in 1775; the northern three by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen in 1819. They were named “Sandwich Land” by Cook after the 4th Earl of Sandwich, 1st Lord of the Admiralty.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This attractive print was published in: Cook, James & King, James (1785) ‘Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, undertaken by the Command of His Majesty, for making discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere. Performed under the direction of Captains Cook, Clerke and Gore, in His Majesty’s ships the Resolution and Discovery , in the years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779 and 1780.’ In three volumes. and a fourth folio volume with engravings, known as ‘Atlas’, This is a later etching from c 1800.

Biography engraver: Robert Page was a British engraver.
