Medium: Etching / Engraving on wove (vellin) paper. Watermark: No.

Sheet size: 26 x 20 cm (10.24 x 7.87 inch). Image size: 17.2 x 14 cm. (6.77 x 5.51 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Minor foxing. Stain and rubbing in right margin. Light crease in lower right corner. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This attractive print was first published in: Cook, James & King, James (1785) “Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, undertaken by the Command of His Majesty, for making discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere. Performed under the direction of Captains Cook, Clerke and Gore, in His Majesty’s ships the Resolution and Discovery , in the years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779 and 1780.” In three volumes. and a fourth folio volume with engravings, known as “Atlas”, plate 20. This print is from a later edition.

Biography engraver: Hawkins (1802-?), unknown Bristish printmaker.

Biography artist: John Webber (1752-1793) was the official artist for the third voyage of Captain James Cook (1728-1779). The purpose of this voyage was to discover the Northwest Passage and to explore the Pacific Ocean north of the Equator. Captain Cook was an extraordinary explorer known for discovering and mapping unknown territory and for his many contributions to the scientific world. This original engraving from Webber’s drawings and paintings are only a glimpse into this great man’s historical contributions that make him one of the greatest explorers of all times.
