Noce de village. – This print shows a wedding in a village. The bride under an improvised tent. The coloured husband a few steps away. In front some suggestive ellements: a mother with a young child on her lap. A dog held by quarrelling boys. In the lower margin a coat of arms with unicorns on both sides.

‘Noce de village.’

Stipple engraving with hand colouring on wove (vellin) paper.
Sheet size: 27,5 x 38 cm. (10,8 x 15 inch). Image size: 23,5 x 35 cm. (9,3 x 13,8 inch).

This attractive print was originally published under supervision of mr. Godefroy, supreme controler of the marine in 1795. This is probably a later impression.

Made by ‘Charles Melchior Descourtis’ after ‘Nicolas-Antoine Taunay’. Charles Melchior Descourtis (1753-1820) was a French artist and publisher. Nicolas-Antoine Taunay (1755-1830) was a French painter known best for his landscapes with scenes from ancient and modern history, mythology, and religion.

Condition: Good, given age. Upper right corner with paper separation, backed. 2 Small tears in right margin, backed. Trimmed inside plate marks at top left and right. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
