A detailed ethnographic scene of a communal feast among Native Americans. Women prepare a fermented beverage by chewing and spitting plant matter into a large pot over a fire. Others serve bowls of the resulting brew. Surrounding them, men wearing feathered headdresses dance and hold ritual objects, possibly maracas or ceremonial gourds. A group of women sit in conversation at the bottom left.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases, though he also printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated volumes. He also printed many maps that were often out of print, which he reissued.

Biography engraver: Jan Goeree (1670?1731) was a Dutch draughtsman, engraver, and poet active in Amsterdam. He worked for Pieter van der Aa on various historical and topographical publications.

Biography artist: Publisher: Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher and bookseller based in Leiden. He specialized in geography and travel books, producing numerous atlases and city plans. He often republished earlier works, combining original material with reprints from other cartographers.
