BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Naaukeurige Versameling der Gedenk-waardigste Zee en Land-reysen, na Oost en West-Indien.’, (transl.: Accurate accounts of memorable sea and land-voyages, to the East and West Indies), published by Pieter Van Der Aa, Leiden 1706-1708. Originally from Olfert Dapper’s Naukeurige Beschrijvingen der Afrikaensche Gewesten… (Amsterdam, 1668). Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases, though he also printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated volumes. He also printed many maps that were often out of print, which he reissued.

Biography engraver: Jan Goeree (1670-1731) was a Dutch draughtsman, engraver and author in Amsterdam. Pupil of Gerard de Lairesse and son of Willem Goeree, he was active in illustrating historical and religious texts.
Biography artist: Olfert Dapper (1639-1689) was a Dutch physician and writer known for his influential geographical and ethnographic works. His richly illustrated descriptions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas were widely read despite his never having traveled outside the Netherlands. Publisher: Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher and bookseller based in Leiden. He specialized in geography and travel books, producing numerous atlases and city plans. He often republished earlier works, combining original material with reprints from other cartographers.
