This print shows inhabitants of Middelburg and Orangists looting the house Leeuwenburg on the Lange Noordstraat in Middelburg (Netherlands) belonging to the patriot, doctor Lucas van Steveninck, after being shot at during the night of June 30th until Juli the first in 1787. People throwing things out of the house, in the street adults and children tearing curtains apart, a dog is barking, people commenting on what is happening, people sitting at the roof top.

Made by ‘Mathias de Sallieth’ after ‘Jan Arends’. Mathias de Sallieth (1749 – 1791) was an engraver born in Prague and later working in Rotterdam. Jan Arends (11 September 1738, in Dordrecht ? 22 April 1805, in Dordrecht) was a Dutch painter. He was the brother of the poet Roelof Arends. He was a pupil of J. Ponse, and painted landscapes and marine subjects. He laboured many years at Amsterdam and Middelburg, but returned eventually to Dordrecht, where he died in 1805. He was well skilled in perspective, and practised engraving.

Condition: good, given age. Trimmed near plate mark at top and bottom. Some thin paper spot. Small tear at top left middle, backed. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
