Made by Giles Demarteau after Jean Baptiste le Prince. Gilles Demarteau (1729-1776) was a French engraver. He worked closely with Fragonard, Van Loo and Boucher. He is credited with creating a new polychrome pencil etching process. Jean Baptist Le Prince (1734-1781) came from Metz and studied with Boucher in Paris. He stayed in St. Ptersburg between 1758 and 1763. After returning to France he etched many Russian scenes. Le Prince is also considered to be the inventor of the aquatint.
