Explorers arrive at the Illinois village. Marquette and Jolliet are greeted by the Illinois. Longhouses can be seen in the foreground. But the round huts in the background are more reminiscent of African villages, as are the costumes and the general look of the scene. He is greeted by a completely naked, crowned native, holding a strange pipe in his right hand. The arrivals are followed by another group of natives wearing two more pipes. Marquette wears a monk’s or Franciscan’s robe with a hood. A large tonsure adorns his head. Jolliet wears a long dress and an oriental or Middle Eastern hat. A second welcome scene takes place in the background under the rays of an anthropomorphic sun. Two Europeans in hooded robes are greeted by three Native Americans carrying pipes and followed by a group nonchalantly carrying their bows.
