Plate 38: ‘Theodora, ziende dat Didymus om haarent wille zoud onthoofd worden, komt aanloopen om mede aan de martelkroon deelachtig te zijn’ (Theodora, seeing how Didymus is about to be beheaded for saving her, joins him in martyrdom). It shows: A man with raised sword is poised for decapitating Didymus, while she enters the scene with arms raised. A large group of spectators is gathered, as are some high-ranking soldiers on horses. This original engraving originates from ‘Tafereelen der eerste Christenen, bestaande in 92 konstprenten’ (Scenes of the first Christians, in 92 prints). This book was published in 1740 in Amsterdam by Gerrity de Groot and Jacobus Rijkhof. The prints by Luyken are accompanied by texts by P. Langendyk and C.
