This plate shows the ruins of the Temple of Freedom in Campo Vaccino (‘cattle fields’) in Rome. A fine architecture print. This scarse highly decorative original old antique print / plate originates from: ‘Denkmaler des Alten Roms oder Sammlung der vornehmen und noch in Rom vorhandenen Alterthumer nach Barbaults Zeichnung nebst einer Erklarung derselben aus dem Franzosischen ubersetzt.’ (Monuments of ancient Rome after drawings by Barbault and a description of these translated from French.), published by Conrad Heinrich Stage, Augsburg, 1782. This edition is a translation from the original French edition: ‘Les plus beaux monuments de Rome ancienne …’Artists and Engravers: The etchings / engravings are engraved by Georg Christoph Kilian, German engraver, collector, and cartographer (1709-1781), after Jean Barbault (c. 1705-1766), a French painter and engraver. Kilian was a student of Giovanni Battista Piranesi.
