BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Engraving by Joseph Wagner after a painting by Giuseppe Zais. .
Biography engraver: Joseph Wagner (1706-1780) was an 18th-century German engraver trained in Venice under Jacopo Amigoni. He worked in Rome, Bologna, Paris, and England before returning to Venice, where he founded a printmaking school. His students included Francesco Bartolozzi and Antonio Capellan.
Biography artist: Giuseppe Zais (1709-1784) was an Italian painter known for his landscapes influenced by Marco Ricci and Francesco Zuccarelli. He painted vedute and frescoes, notably in Villa Pisani, and was a member of the Academy of Painters in Venice.
