BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Based on classical head studies by Jules Romain. Published in Paris.
Biography engraver: Antoine Carree was a French engraver active from the 1780s to early 1800s. Trained under Janinet and Prevost, he worked in wash engraving and produced portraits, allegories, and classical subjects. He exhibited at the Salon in 1801.
Biography artist: Giulio Romano (c.1499-1546), born in Rome, was a painter and architect, pupil and collaborator of Raphael. Known in France as Jules Romain, he became court artist to the Gonzagas in Mantua and one of the leading figures of Mannerism.
