Description
Two mounted huntsmen have arrived at an inn. The proprietor is standing in the doorway. This is an aquatint reproduction of the first major oil painting exhibited by Clennell at the British Institution in 1813.
Made by an anonymous engraver after L Clennell.
Medium: Handcoloured aquatint and line etching on wove (vellin) paper. Watermark: Stacey wise 1818.
Sheet size: 41.5 x 32.7 cm (16.34 x 12.87 inch). Image size: 22.8 x 22.5 cm. (8.98 x 8.86 inch).
Condition: excellent, given age. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Published in London by T.M. Lean in 1818.
Biography artist: Luke Clennell (1781-1840) was a British coastal and landscape painter; apprenticed to Thomas Bewick in 1797, became talented wood-engraver. After completion of most ambitious work, ‘Banquet of the Allied Sovereigns in the Guildhall’, became insane in 1819 and from 1831 was permanently in an asylum.
