BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Published in France by Basan c. 1770.

Biography engraver: Pierre-Francois Basan (Paris 1723-1797) is a French engraver. He was a pupil of Etienne Fessard and Jean Daulle. He was principally occupied as a printseller, and published a ‘Dictionnaire des Graveurs’ in 1789.

Biography artist: Joos van Craesbeeck (c. 1605/06 ? c. 1660) was a Flemish baker and a painter who played an important role in the development of Flemish genre painting in the mid-17th century through his tavern scenes and dissolute portraits.
