Biography engraver: Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) was one of the most important Dutch portrait engravers of the eighteenth century. The son of the painter and writer Arnold Houbraken, he produced highly refined engravings after painted portraits of notable historical figures. His work appeared in major biographical publications such as The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain. Houbraken’s clear line and delicate shading made his portraits widely admired and collected.
Biography artist: Hieronymus van der Mij (1687-1761) was a Dutch painter and engraver active in Leiden and Amsterdam. Known primarily for portraiture, he produced paintings of scholars, professors, and notable figures of Dutch society. His portraits often served as the basis for engraved reproductions by artists such as Jacobus Houbraken.
