– Oval portrait of the Dutch statesman Cornelis de Witt shown half-length in richly embroidered costume with lace cravat and sash, set within a stone oval frame on a pedestal with identifying inscription. Cornelis de Witt (1623-1672) was a Dutch statesman, burgomaster of Dordrecht, and Ruwaard of Putten. He was the brother of Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt and played an important role in the politics of the Dutch Republic during the First Stadtholderless Period. In 1672, the Rampjaar, he and his brother were murdered in The Hague by an Orangist mob. This engraved portrait was made by Bernard Picart and appeared in historical and biographical publications in the late 17th and early 18th century.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Found in editions of Dutch historical works such as P.C. Hooft, Bor, or Jean Le Clerc; engraved by Bernard Picart, 1729.

Biography engraver: Bernard Picart (1673-1733) was a French painter and engraver. He received his art education from his father, Etienne (1632-1721), from Le Brun and Jouvenet at the Royal Academy. His talents developed rapidly: at the age of sixteen he gained honors at the Academy of Paris. His prints in the ‘French’ taste were very popular. His way of working was also very influential for the book illustration in the Netherlands.
