Part of a series of four aquatints depicting the first recorded steeplechase, published in 1839. This is Plate IV, titled “The finish?a good ‘un still alive?Grand Chorus, The Lads of the Village!”

Made by John Harris the Younger after Henry Thomas Alken.

Medium: Aquatint with hand colouring on wove (vellin) paper.

Sheet size: 36.8 x 27.3 cm (14.49 x 10.75 inch). Image size: 25.4 x 18.4 cm. (10 x 7.24 inch).

Condition: very good, given age. Light foxing. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Biography engraver: John Harris the Younger (1791-1873) was a British engraver and aquatint artist, known for his detailed depictions of sporting events, landscapes, and architectural scenes. He was particularly noted for his skill in producing color aquatints, which were highly prized in the 19th century.

Biography artist: Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851) was a British painter and engraver, primarily known for his sporting and hunting scenes. His work was widely popular, and he produced numerous prints, often focusing on equestrian subjects and the English countryside.
