– Portrait of the Flemish engraver Aegidius (Gilles) Sadeler shown half-length facing slightly left while looking directly at the viewer. He wears a broad collar and cloak, holding a chain with a medallion bearing a portrait. The background is filled with fine cross-hatched engraving typical of seventeenth-century reproductive portrait prints. The portrait was engraved by Pieter de Jode II after a design by Aegidius Sadeler himself and published by Joannes Meyssens in Antwerp. Aegidius Sadeler (c.1570-1629) was a prominent Flemish engraver and member of the celebrated Sadeler family of printmakers. He worked in Antwerp, Munich, and Prague, producing engravings after major painters such as Bartholomeus Spranger and other artists of the Prague court. His work played a key role in spreading late Renaissance and early Baroque artistic styles through printed imagery.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Biography engraver: Pieter de Jode II (1606-after 1674) was a Flemish engraver and publisher active in Antwerp. The son of the engraver Pieter de Jode I, he continued the family’s printmaking workshop and produced numerous reproductive engravings after contemporary Flemish and Italian artists. His prints were widely circulated in illustrated books and portrait series.

Biography artist: Aegidius Sadeler (c.1570-1629) was a Flemish engraver and painter belonging to the renowned Sadeler dynasty of printmakers. Born in Antwerp, he worked in Munich and later in Prague at the court of Emperor Rudolf II. Sadeler engraved works after many leading artists of his time and helped disseminate the artistic style of the late Renaissance and early Baroque across Europe.
