Johann Heinrich Samuel Formey (1711-1797) was a German philosopher, theologian, and historian born in Berlin. Of Huguenot descent, he became a prominent member of the Prussian intellectual community and served as perpetual secretary of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Formey wrote extensively on philosophy, theology, and intellectual history, producing numerous essays and biographies and acting as an important mediator of Enlightenment ideas in German-speaking Europe. He was also a member of several learned academies, including those in London, Gottingen, and St. Petersburg.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Johann Jakob Haid, Neue Sammlung von Bildnissen gelehrter um die Kirche, um das gemeine Wesen und um das Reich der Wissenschaften verdienter noch lebender Manner, Augsburg, 1757.

Biography engraver: Johann Jakob Haid (1704-1767) was a German engraver, mezzotint specialist, publisher, and art dealer active in Augsburg. He was among the most important German practitioners of mezzotint in the eighteenth century. Haid produced numerous portraits of European nobility, scholars, clergy, and officials, often after paintings by contemporary artists. Through his publishing house he distributed portrait prints widely across the German states, contributing significantly to the popularity of mezzotint portraiture in Central Europe.

Biography artist: David Matthieu (1697-1755) was a German portrait painter active in Berlin and other German courts. He was known for portraits of scholars, clergy, and members of the educated elite during the early Enlightenment. His paintings frequently served as models for engraved portraits that circulated widely in print.
