– A historical map of the southern tip of South America and the Strait of Magellan, illustrating the voyage of Dutch explorer Olivier van Noort from November 1599 to February 1600. It shows three ships at sea, a large compass rose, and a prominent depiction of a penguin. The lower right contains an ornate cartouche with the map title and a mileage scale. The map also marks various geographic locations in present-day Chile, Argentina, and Tierra del Fuego.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This engraving, created by Baptista van Doetecum, was first used as an illustration in Van Noort’s travel account published in 1602 and later included in VOC voyage collections. Originally published in Beschryvinghe vande voyagie om den geheelen werelt cloot (1602) and later in Begin ende voortgangh van de Vereenighde Nederlantsche Geoctroyeerde Oost-Indische Compagnie (1646).

Reference: Referenced in Frederik Muller’s De Nederlandsche geschiedenis in platen (FMH 1055-AI(5)/8) and New Hollstein Dutch 1021-3(3).

Biography engraver: Baptista van Doetecum (d. 1611) was a Dutch printmaker.
