– Engraving of the dramatic landscape of Christmas Sound in Tierra del Fuego, with a rugged coastline, snow-capped mountains, and a ship sailing through the water. A bird is perched on a rocky outcrop in the foreground. This print originates from the Dutch edition of Captain Cook’s voyages (Reize rondom de Waereld), published between 1795-1797. The engraver for this Dutch version is J.S. Klauber. The original drawing was made by William Hodges during Cook’s second voyage (1772-1775), based on sketches from December 20-28, 1774.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Reize rondom de Waereld door James Cook, Dutch edition, published by Honcoop, Allart, and Van Cleef (1795-1797). Based on drawings from Cook’s second voyage.

Biography engraver: Joseph Sebastian Klauber (1710-1768) was a German miniaturist and engraver from Augsburg, primarily known for religious engravings. He was a pupil of Antoine Birckhaert in Prague. His work for Reize rondom de Waereld adapted illustrations from Cook’s voyages for the Dutch edition.

Biography artist: William Hodges (1744-1797) was an English artist and draughtsman, best known for accompanying Captain James Cook on his second voyage to the Pacific (1772-1775). His paintings and drawings were used to illustrate Cook’s explorations.
