This delicate handcoloured engraving originates from: ‘Oeuvres completes de Buffon, avec la nomenclature Linneene et la classification de Cuvier.’ Published in Paris by Garnier Freres, Libraires, 6 Rue des Saint-Peres, 1853.Artists and Engravers: Author: Georges-Louis Le Clerc, Comte de Buffon (September 7, 1707 – April 16, 1788). French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Buffon’s views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. This handcoloured engravings is by Oudet after Edouard Travies (1809-c1868) The minute precision of Edouard Travies’ work places him with the best of France’s scientific artists. his bird drawings are considered to be some of the finest ever produced.
Condition: Very good, given age. General age related toning and occasional light staining from handling as visible on image if applicable. Some remains of binding in margin. This plate has not been washed, bleached , restored in any way. Please study image carefully.
