‘CARTE DU GOUVERNEMENT DE BRETAGNE’

– 18th-century map of Brittany, France, by Rigobert Bonne (1727-1794). This finely engraved and hand-colored map captures the historic French region of Brittany, known for its rich maritime history, unique cultural identity, and renowned food products such as cider, Muscadet wine, and seafood. Covering the former province of Brittany, the map extends from Granville to the Isle de Noirmoutier and highlights Finist?re, C?tes-d’Armor, Ille-et-Vilaine, Loire-Atlantique (Loire-Inferieure), and Morbihan. Detailed topographical and political features are depicted, with forests and mountains rendered in delicate profile shading. A highly decorative title cartouche in the lower left corner enhances the visual appeal of this piece. The map was drawn by Bonne in 1771 and was later issued in Jean Lattre’s Atlas Moderne. Bonne was a key figure in 18th-century French cartography, known for shifting towards scientific accuracy and practical aesthetics in his maps.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Published in Jean Lattre’s Atlas Moderne, 1771.

Reference: Rumsey 2612.009 (1786 edition).

Biography engraver: Rigobert Bonne (1727-1794) was a French cartographer and Royal Hydrographer, known for his scientific approach to mapmaking. He succeeded Jacques-Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer of France in 1773. Bonne’s work represents a shift from decorative cartography to detailed, mathematically accurate projections. His maps were highly influential, particularly in coastal navigation and geographic education. His Atlas Moderne remains one of the most significant 18th-century French atlases.
