BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Published as a dedication print to Emperor Leopold II, possibly part of a commissioned series.

Reference: National Gallery of Art, Washington (Accession No. 2002.14.2).

Biography engraver: Charles-Melchior Descourtis (1753-1820) was a French engraver and publisher active in Paris, known for his aquatints, particularly of scenic landscapes and views commissioned for noble patrons.

Biography artist: Friedrich Rosenberg (1758-1833) was a German landscape painter and draftsman, famous for his Alpine and naturalistic compositions. Johann Heinrich Troll (1756-1824) was a Swiss painter, graphic artist and engraver.
