Labours of Hercules

Engravings on hand laid (verge type) paper.
Sheet size: 5 x 8 cm. Image size: 5 x 8 cm.

Source: Engraved by Solis after his down design. We compared the linework to copies in collections of the BM and Rijksmuseum and literature. The source is unknown, there is no provenance and these type of prints are typically published as a series of prints. The character of the paper points to its dating as well.. Ref: oa. Made by Virgil Solis after own design. Virgil / Virgilius Solis (1514-1562) came from Nuremberg Germany, becoming a master in 1539. Although he was a self-proclaimed painter, he is known for his work as a printmaker and book illustrator. He specialized. Like many of his contemporary German printmakers in small, but highly finished engravings.

Condition: Good, given age. Trimmed close to image as is common, ocassionally into image. One plate with remargined right paper edges. Sizes vary slightly. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
