Description
(‘A king once walked, silent and alone’). Two sheets, one with calligraphed text, the other with a watercolour of the king leaning on his sword at the edge of a lake in the forest. The story is about a king who goes swimming, while wearing his clothes and ermine cloak. No one witnesses his drowning. The moral is contiained in the two last lines: “Een koningskleed soms wel fijn maar / veel te zwaar om alleen te zijn…” (A king’s clothes sometimes nice but / much to heavy to carry alone). The text is written in black ink, with a decorated initial E (the decorations in watercolour and ink). Some further decoration along the lower edges of the text. The watercolour is made on a separate sheet of card, mounted on the larger sheet.
