With a legend in French and Dutch at the top: 1. Japanese beggars. 2. Horihonse. 3. Leper. 4. Drecketer. 5. Self-killing / burning. 6. Bathing of Brahmans. 7. Fire Martyr. 8. Mexican human offering. 9. Xiuhtecuhtli and other Aztec gods. 10 Turkish Dervish. Rare. First published in ‘Curieuse aenmerckingen der bysonderste Oost en West-Indische verwonderens-waerdige dingen […]’, by S. de Vries, published in Utrecht by J. Ribbius, 1682. Later decorative banners were added and then published in ‘Les Indes orientales et occidentales, et autres lieux.’, by Romeyn de Hooghe, published by Pieter van der Aa, leiden, 1710. Extremely rare in any edition.Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Romeyn de Hooghe’ after own design. Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) was an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque engraver and caricaturist. De Hooghe was skilled as an etcher, draughtsman, painter, sculptor and medalist. He is best known for political caricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. During his career, de Hooghe produced over 3500 prints. He also illustrated books, and his illustrations can be found in some of the most important texts of his period. Publisher: Pieter van der Aa (Leiden 1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases.
Condition: Very good, given age. Original middle fold as issued. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
