Franciae Orientalis (Vulgo Franckenlant) Descriptio / Auctore Sebast. A Rotenhan – Monasteriensis Et Osnaburgensis Episcopatus Descriptio / Auctore Godefrido Mascop. – Two handcoloured maps of Franken by Sebastian von Rotenhan (1478-1534) and the diocese Münster and Osnabrück by Gottfried Maschop (1550-1603), published by Abraham Ortelius in Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, first edition 1570, this one is from 1573. Text on reverse in Latin. Franken map with cartouche from Sebastian Rotenhan. The map shows the area between Kulmbach, Rothenburg or the Tauber, Frankfurt and Schmalkalden. The centre of the map is near Schweinfurt. East oriented map. The map of Münster with wonderful painted cartouche and compass rose by Godfried Maschop. The eldest printed map from dioceses Münster and Osnabrück with Tecklenburg and Ravensberg on the borders from Oldenburg, Diepholz, Lippstadt, Werne, Bocholt and Meppen.

Engraving, handcoloured on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: Crossed arrows.
Sheet size: 56,5 x 41,5 cm. (22,2 x 16,3 inch). Image size: 25 x 36 cm. (9,8 x 14,2 inch).

Made by an anonymous engraver after ‘Sebastian von Rotenhan and Gottfried Maschop’.

Condition: Fair, given age. Original colour but browned, restored (doubled with thin paper on the reverse), edges reinforced, remains of previous soiling to be seen on the reverse side in stains all over. Two scratches in the image, in the middle and upper left of the map. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
