Description
The Dutch Lion, with lance, liberty hat and privileges, presents William of Orange with the sword on behalf of the States General to fight Spanish tyranny, 1572. On the right the broken printing press, in the background the prince’s army and fleet.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Reference: Hollstein Dutch 73.
Biography engraver: Pieter Serwouters (1586-1657) was an engraver, etcher and draughtsman. He was born and worked in Antwerp before moving to Amsterdam in 1622. Brother of Philips, who was a woodcut designer.
Biography artist: Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne (1589 – 1662), was a versatile Dutch Golden Age painter of allegories, genre subjects, and portraits, as well as a miniaturist, book illustrator, designer of political satires, and versifier.
