Biography engraver: Cornelis Schut (1597-1655) was a painter and etcher: worked in Antwerp. He was the publisher of his own etchings because his signature appears with the words ‘Cum privilegio’ in most of them. His work is influenced by Rubens, but there is no documentary evidence for any direct relationship with his studio. He travelled in Spain where his brother worked as engineer for Philip IV. Between 1622 and 1627 he was in Rome. Some sources mention that Schut’s etchings were mostly made for him in his studio, probably by a Jan Vinck who was contracted to work for him for three years.
