BACKGROUND INFORMATION
‘Galerie du Palais Royal …’, Paris: J. Couche & J. Bouilliard, [n.d., 1786-1808]. This series of plates depict the collection of the Royal Palace in Paris. Each plate is set in a decorative border and accompanied by a descriptive text (by l’Abbe de Fontenal), describing the artist and painting. The author Jacques Couche (1759-1836), was a French engraver, student of Levasseur.
Biography engraver: Francois Robert Ingouf (1747-1812) was a French engraver, etching engraver, etching artist. Jacques Voyez was a contemporary of whom little has been recorded.
Biography artist: Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669), Dutch painter and etcher, widely regarded as one of the greatest visual artists in the history of art and the most important in Dutch art history.
