Description
Allegorical engraving depicting Justice uncovering the sin of sodomy in the Netherlands, 1730. This print is associated with a significant historical moment of legal and religious persecution, in particular targeting homosexuality in the early 18th century. The allegorical scene shows the Dutch Virgin (symbolizing Justice) holding scales and a sword, seated on a throne. Father Time lifts a curtain beneath which eight men are revealed. Above, a celestial figure with a flaming sword represents divine wrath.
