BACKGROUND INFORMATION
From a series ‘De delen van de dag’ (parts of the day). Publisher: Johannes de Ram (1648-1693), who was an etcher, publisher and dealer in Amsterdam.
Reference: Hollstein Dutch 71 mentions 3 states. This is a later 17th.c. ed. of the 3rd state.
Biography engraver: Jan van de Velde II (1593-1641) came from the southern Netherlands as a fugitive around 1600 to the northern Netherlands. His father was a writingmaster and Jan was trained as an etcher. He produced many highly important series of landscape prints.
